Laser Confocal Microscope Offers SEM Resolution

The KEYENCE VK-9700 provides laser measurement accuracy with SEM resolution in an optical microscope. The VK-9700 Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope provides advantages over SEMs, roughness meters and optical microscopes for observation as well as shape/surface analysis and non-contact, non-destructive examination without requiring cutting/processing or sputtering. It provides 18,000x magnification, 0.001 µm measurement precision, a large depth-of-field, 3D imaging, 3D surface profiling, and color topographic displays with automatic X, Y and Z axis scaling.

In-Process Measurement Makes Sense

Work-around techniques are still commonplace throughout all manufacturing industries, even though most companies actively embrace and implement quality control procedures. Rather than rejecting incorrectly fitting parts and subassemblies and re-engineering the process to make them right, manufacturers continue to use loose go-with-work/no-go tests and work-around procedures to cover out-of-control processes.

SME to Participate in Berlin Air Show

Dearborn, MI—The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has entered into an agreement with Hannover Fairs USA (HFUSA) to participate in the Berlin International Air Show in Berlin, Germany, May 27 to June 1, 2008. Europe's largest 2008 air show attracts political, civil and military decision-makers from the developing countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

SME will assemble an international panel discussion on continuous improvement for aerospace manufacturers and their supply chain. The panelists will represent aerospace OEMs and suppliers who will share best practices, benchmarking experiences, process improvements and their lean manufacturing philosophy. In Europe especially, where the euro value is high, adding value to production without adding cost to the customer is essential to a successful manufacturing operation.
